Mecklenburg Aquatic Club Wins Georgia Speedo Championship -- March 14, 2007

COLUMBUS, Ohio, March 14. THE Mecklenburg Aquatic Club dominated the 2007 Georgia Speedo Championship Series, winning in a score of 1125. Pilot Aquatics was the closest team with 972 points. Dynamo followed in a score of 921.5.

Not surprisingly, Mary Descenza governed the women's side of the meet, winning a total of four events. She began her winning streak in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:47.52. The former Georgia Bulldog then took first in her signature 100- (54.18) and 200-yard butterfly (1:56.92) events, but not before closing the meet with a victory in the 100-yard backstroke (54.33).

A.J. Tipton was the top performer in three events. He swam the fastest time of 1:48.52 in the 200-yard butterfly. Switching to freestyle, Tipton garnered wins in both the 500- and 1,650-yard freestyle. He stopped the clock at 4:30.14 and 15:31.73, respectively.

Breaststrokers Kristen Polley and Dillo Connolly both won the 100- and 200-yard distances. In a close race, Polley emerged the victor in 1:03.49 in the 100-yard breaststroke. She finished the 200 in 2:15.16. Connolly touched the wall in 55.99 in the 100 and 2:04.01 in the 200.

Kirsten Smith stopped the clock ahead of competitors in both the 200- and 400-yard individual medley. Her time of 2:00.08 in the 200 qualifies as a meet record. Smith completed the 400-yard distance in 4:16.58 to outdistance the next swimmer by nine seconds.

Kelsey Ditto demonstrated her endurance when she won the 500-yard freestyle, as well as the 1,650-yard freestyle. She hit the wall in 4:47.38 in the 500 and 16:10.81 in the 1,650. Andre Mitchell earned his first victory by swimming the 400-yard individual medley 10 seconds faster than anyone else in a time of 3:52.96. He went on to pick up the 200-yard backstroke title in 1:50.01.
