California Sets American, NCAA Record in 400 Medley Relay; Arizona Leads After Day One

By Jason Marsteller

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, March 8. IN the final event of a lightning fast initial day of competition at the women's NCAA Division I Championships, the California contingent of Lauren Rogers, Jessica Hardy, Dana Vollmer and Emily Silver set the second American and NCAA record of the day with a 3:30.18. That effort erased the 3:31.74 American record posted by Stanford in March 21, 2002 and the 3:31.45 NCAA standard set by Auburn on March 20, 2003.

Meanwhile, Arizona finished a close second to lock down the first-day lead with a time of 3:30.89 from Hailey Degolia, Annie Chandler, Whitney Myers and Lacey Nymeyer. Stanford's team of Julia Smit, Caroline Bruce, Elaine Breeden and Brooke Bishop closed out the top three in 3:34.86.

At the end of the day, Arizona held a slight lead, 168-155, over Auburn. Stanford is close in third with 123.5 points, while California (98) and Georgia (86) comprise the rest of the top five.
