ST. PETERSBURG, Florida, March 1. REPRESENTING St. Petersburg Aquatics at the Florida Senior State Championships, Robert Margalis established an American record in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Margalis clocked a time of 8:42.64 to better the 2001 record of 8:44.11 by Chris Thompson. Margalis split 4:19.66 at the midpoint of the race, a seldom-contested distance in major competition.
