FEDERAL WAY, Washington, March 6. CARL Jones, a Walla Walla senior, earned 4A Swimmer of the Year honors in the men's Washington State High School Championships.

Jones crushed the other swimmers in the 200 freestyle, swimming to a time of 1:40.73. He then went head-to-head with the 200 IM champion, Bothell's Chris Winchell, in the 500 freestyle, touching the wall a few seconds ahead of him with a winning time of 4:29.78.

Mount Tahoma senior Clinton Stipek placed first in both sprint events. He swam to a 21.37 final time in the 50 freestyle and a 46.81 finish in the 100 freestyle.

Botchell's Ben Nicholas bested the diving field with a final score of 405.20. Davis's Randy Peltier and Redmond's Max Klassen took second and third with scores of 366.20 and 364.95, respectively.

Snohomish, despite winning only one individual event and one relay event, outdid the rest of the competition. Its 266.5 points distanced it 100 points from the second-place team. Only a few points separated second from third as Redmond edged out Bothell 164-162.
