Maine Teenager Gives Hair to Charity
BANGOR, Maine, February 21. DURING an age when pop stars roll into a hair salon and opt for the bald look to seemingly grab more publicity, Amy Harrison went with the Mr. Clean look for a good reason. A senior at Mount Desert Island, Harrison recently shaved her head in preparation for the Maine Class B State Championships.
But, Harrison didn't just shave off her hair for speed purposes. She donated her removed hair, 13 inches worth, to Locks of Love. The charitable organization takes human hair and constructs wigs for use by cancer patients. At the state-championship meet, Harrison finished eighth in the 100 butterfly and placed 13th in the 100 breaststroke.
"I was going to do it last year because the boys always do it but I decided to do it this year," Harrison told the Bangor Daily News. "I'm just kind of spontaneous and I wanted a change. I kind of like the idea of doing whatever I want and not caring what people think."
