Williams Leads After Day One of NESCAC Women’s Championships

WILLIAMSTOWN, Massachusetts, February 16. AFTER day one of the 2007 NESCAC Women's Championships, Williams College has the overall points lead over Middlebury College and Amherst College. The Ephs grabbed one title on the day en route to a 46.5 lead after nine events. Amherst College won four NESCAC titles, the most of any school, and sits in third place- 109 points out of first.

The lone Williams title came from senior Laura McCarthy. In the 50 yard freestyle, McCarthy swam to the top time of 24.02.

One of the most exciting events of the day happened to be the last- the 400 yard medley relay. The Amherst squad of senior Piper Pettersen, junior Brittney Sasser, and sophomores Mary Marvel and Meaghan Stern swam to a time of 3:52.94 and a NESCAC title.

The tandem of Stern and Sasser not only claimed a relay title but each also captured an individual title earlier in the meet. In the 500 yard freestyle, Stern bested the competition with a time of 5:03.04, while in the 200 yard IM Sasser swam to a time of 2:05.87. Junior Lisa Pritchard rounded out the Amherst titles when her time of 27.24 gave her the top spot in the 50 yard backstroke.

Middlebury College, who sits in second place after Day 1, also claimed multiple titles on the day. In the 200 yard freestyle relay, senior Barbara van deer Meer, junior Marika Ross, sophomore Lindsey Dattels, and first year Katie Remington bested the field with a time of 1:37:07. Ross followed that victory up with an individual title in the 50 yard butterfly with a time of 25.85.

Colby and Tufts claimed the other two titles on the day. In the 50 yard breaststroke, Mule junior Kelly Norsworthy posted the top time of 29:55. In the 1 meter dive, Jumbos junior Kendall Sweet bested the field with a score of 475.20.
