Virginia High School Championships Saved

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia, February 2. IN danger for almost a month, the Virginia Class AAA State Championships will be held in Virginia Beach with Kellam High School Athletic Director Jim Moxey as director of the meet. The competition, which will be held Feb. 9-10 at the Baysie Recreation Center, was nearly canceled because it did not have a director.

According to reports, the Northwest Region was responsible this year for providing a meet director and staffing the event, but did not follow through on the duties called for during its cycle in charge. Consequently, the Virginia Beach Public Schools were forced to rescue the competition. Had those schools not stepped forward, there was a chance the meet would have been washed from the schedule.

The Virginia High School League is planning on taking measures to ensure that future problems do not arise when it comes to the responsibilities of hosting a state-championship meet. The Northwest Region has recognized its turn in the hosting cycle, but indicated that it was unaware it was required to supply a meet director and staff for the meet.
