Bulldogs Hand 181-119 Loss to Bears

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut, January 28. THE Yale men's swimming and diving team comfortably beat Brown 181-119 Saturday afternoon in its last home meet of the season. The occasion was marked by head coach Frank Keefe's recognition of Yale's senior class.

A boisterous Yale squad was in no mood to be upset on senior day. Alex Righi set the pace once again by winning every individual event he competed in. Righi claimed first place in the 100 yard freestyle, the 100 yard backstroke, and the 100 yard butterfly.

But while Righi helped keep the Bears at bay, Dennen McCloskey got a lighthearted earful from his teammates for twice keeping Yale seniors out of first place. In the 200 yard freestyle McCloskey beat his captain Geof Zann out of first by over a second and a haf. Then in the 200 yard individual medley – the penultimate event of the day – McCloskey pipped senior Chris Dufek to the post by a mere 0.15 seconds.

The 500 yard freestyle was one of many successful events for the Bulldogs, but this time the seniors had a chance to prove their mettle. Andrew Foss won the race and Brown's Peter Volosin prevented the Eli sweep, finishing second ahead of Kent Garber and Kevin Pudas.

Elsewhere, Colin Stalnecker won both the 100 and 200 yard breaststroke events, both by comfortable margins. In the diving events, Jeffrey Lichtenstein squeaked by teammate Douglas Scott to win the 1 meter event with an impressive dive that scored an 8 and an 8.5. Lichtenstein also finished second in the 3 meter event behind Brown's William Robinson.

Next weekend, the Bulldogs will be in action at the H-Y-P meet, which begins on Saturday at 6 pm at Princeton's DeNunzio Pool.
