Nittany Lions Lead Shamrock Invite

SOUTH BEND, Indiana, January 27. – HEADING into the second and final day of competition, the No. 15 Penn State women's swimming and diving team leads the Shamrock Invitational at the Rolfs Aquatic Center. No. 19 Notre Dame women's swimming and diving team (4-0) had a strong opening day and leads three of the four invited teams after the first day of competition. Notre Dame leads Oakland (92-18), Connecticut (85-25) and West Virginia (71-39).

Senior Katie Carroll (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy) once again led the charge with a victory in the 200-yard IM in a time of 2:02.40. For Carroll it was her 14th individual victory of the season. Carroll also, along with fellow seniors Julia Quinn (Evanston, Ill./Evanston) and Ann Barton (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain) and junior Caroline Johnson (Springfield, Mo./Glendale) finished as the runner-up in the 400-yard medley relay (3:47.27). Caroline Johnson and Carroll also teamed up with Rebecca Grove (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) and Christa Riggins (Phoenix, Ariz./Sunnyslope) to finish second in the 200-yard freestyle relay with their time of 1:34.48.

Caroline Johnson continued her successful meet by placing just behind West Virginia's Kayla Andrews in second in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 23.73

Other top finishers for the Irish, included the sophomore duo of Casey Wagner (Glenshaw, Pa./Shady Side Academy) and Claire Hutchinson (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) in the grueling 500-yard freestyle. Wagner finished second in the event with her time of 4:52.77, while Hutchinson swam a 4:53.91 to place fourth.

Freshman Natalie Stitt (Holland, Mich./West Ottawa) led the Notre Dame divers in the three-meter dive with a fourth-place finish and 250.30 points.

Next, the Fighting Irish women continue competing at the Shamrock Invitational with a pair of sessions on Saturday, Jan. 27 starting at 10 a.m. The morning session will include the 200- medley relay, 400-IM, 100-butterfly, 200-freestyle, 100-breastroke, 100-backstroke, one-meter diving and the 800-freestyle relay. The evening session will start at 5 p.m. with following events: 1,650-freestyle, 200-backstroke, 100-freestyle, 200-breaststroke, 200-butterfly and 400-freestyle relay.
