Miami (Ohio) Women End Season with Perfect Record -- January 26, 2007
OXFORD, Ohio, January 26. -WRAPPING up its sixth straight season with a perfect conference dual meet record, the Miami University women's swimming and diving team (11-0; 7-0 MAC) won its 46th consecutive Mid-American Conference dual meet with a 192-98 victory over the Bowling Green State Falcons Friday night at the Nixon Aquatic Center. The victory gave Miami its 11th dual meet win of the season, marking the sixth time in program history the Red and White have posted at least 11 wins.
Miami opened the meet with a first-place finish in the 400 medley relay, as the RedHawks "A" team clocked in at 3:59.32. The victory kicked off a streak of five consecutive event wins for Miami, beginning with senior Ashley Seymour's top finish in the 1,650 freestyle (17:25.89). Sophomores Jennifer Nemeth and Malarie Schmidt then followed with first-place finishes in the 200 freestyle (1:54.75) and 100 backstroke (59.02), respectively, before sophomore Paige Iversen capped the win streak with her top finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.43).
Following Bowling Green's first event victory in the 200 butterfly, Miami answered with back-to-back wins in the sprint freestyle, surging out to a 104-43 lead. Sophomore Allison Stevens, the reigning MAC Swimmer and Scholar-Athlete of the Week, won the 50 freestyle with her top time of 24.45, while senior Margaret Patrick followed with her first-place clocking in the 100 freestyle (53.27). Alisha Yee then notched Bowling Green's second win of the meet in the 200 backstroke.
Closing the meet by winning four of the final five swimming events, Miami put an emphatic exclamation point on its perfect conference season. Iversen sparked the winning streak with her first-place showing in the 200 breastroke (2:24.04), as she completed a clean sweep of the breaststroke events. Sophomore Jenn Flaherty followed with her top time in the 500 freestyle (5:07.18), while Stevens added a first-place finish in the 100 butterfly (57.19) and Schmidt clocked in with a first-place time in the 200 individual medley (2:07.37). The Red and White also notched the top time in the 200 freestyle relay (1:40.23) but did not swim the even for points.
Miami also fared well on the boards, with sophomore Melissa Roemmele placing first on both the 1-meter (166.85) and 3-meter (277.80) boards.
Seeking its first perfect season since 1977, Miami travels to Kenyon tomorrow for a 1 p.m. dual meet. Kenyon has captured 20 of the last 23 Division III National Championships, including 17 straight from 1984-2000.
