Flash! Butler University to Cut Men’s Swimming

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, January 26. ACCORDING to the Associated Press,
Butler joined Ohio University as another school to drop the axe on men's swimming this week. The school has also decided to cut lacrosse.

"This action has been taken in order to focus our efforts and seek success in our remaining 19 sports," said Barry Collier, who became athletic director in August.

Men's swimming is a non-scholarship sport at Butler, and the team has been using the pool at Carmel High School for its home meets. The program, which has been in existence since 1928, will be cut on June 1.

Outside of some extremely generic statements touching on finances, Butler never really specifically answered why the school cut the two sports in a press release posted on its athletics web site.
