North Carolina, Virginia Split ACC Performances of the Week Awards

GREENSBORO, North Carolina, January 25. NORTH Carolina swimmer Alison Clemens and Virginia's John Millen earned the ACC Performer of the Week honors for the week of Jan. 22. While Clemens earned the award for the first time, Millen has enjoyed the accolade multiple times throughout the season.

Clemens, who hails from Staten Island, N.Y., posted NCAA "B" qualifying times in all three of her events to lead No. 17 North Carolina (6-1, 3-0 ACC) to a 182-118 victory over No. 20 Virginia in conference action last Saturday.

The freshmen won the 100-yard breaststroke with a season-best time of 1:03.21, tying her for fourth place in UNC history in the event. She also won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:15.85, a season and career best for her and the fifth-best time in school history.

Clemens finished the day as the only three-event winner by clinching the 200-yard individual medley in 2:03.46. She also swam the second leg on the 200-yard medley relay, which placed second.

A senior from Lilburn, Ga., Millen helped the 17th-ranked Cavaliers (6-2, 5-0 ACC) defeat Duke and No. 22 North Carolina over the weekend to remain unbeaten in the ACC.

He was victorious in the 200-yard freestyle, posting a 1:42.14 in the event Duke on Friday night. On Saturday, Millen was a two-time winner as Virginia handed North Carolina its first ACC loss of the year. He won the 1000 freestyle with a season-best time of 9:07.01, which is currently the third-best mark in the league. He also won the 500-yard freestyle, turning in a 4:28.55.

Millen is the only swimmer this season to collect the men's weekly award multiple times.
