Houston Beats Hurricanes, 137-106

HOUSTON, Texas, January 20. THE University of Houston swimming and diving team captrued a 137-106 win over Miami (Fla.) on Saturday at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center Natatorium.

Szanto won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:03.83 and the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:05.10. The Budapest, Hungary, native also finished first in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:18.40, the fourth-fastest time in school history.

With the win, the Cougars improved to 16-4 overall and won for the seventh time in their last eight meets. The Cougars also earned their first victory over Miami (Fla.) since the 1978-79 season and snapped a four-meet losing skid to the Hurricanes.

On the diving side, sophomore Anastasia Pozdniakova won the 3-meter springboard with 350.48 points to edge Miami (Fla.)'s Heather Bounds by nine points. The Elektrostal, Russia, native then capped her day with 299.32 points on the 1-meter springboard to take first place and complete the sweep.

The Cougars were boosted by multiple-winning performances from several Cougars throughout the day. Sophomore Andrea Pa'lmai won the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:17.97 and finished first in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:03.79, nearly four seconds ahead of her closest competitor. Her time in the latter event was the fifth-fastest in UH history and was the fastest by a Cougar swimmer in the CRWC Natatorium.

Sophomore Sasha Schwendenwein finished first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:52.98 and grabbed top honors in the 500-yard freestyle with a clocking of 5:02.71.

Freshman Jessica Shamburger won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 52.81 and finished second in the 50-yard freestyle.

Prior to Saturday's meet, Szanto, swimmer Alejandra Salazar and diver Rachel Gitelson were honored as part of Senior Day.

The Cougars were helped with meet management at Saturday's meet, thanks to swimming and diving student-athletes from Sam Rayburn High School and Pasadena High School from the Pasadena ISD.

The Cougars wrap up their 2006-07 regular-season schedule next weekend on the road. UH will face LSU and Conference USA rival Rice in a two-day tri-meet, beginning at 4 p.m., Friday and wrapping up at 11 a.m., Saturday. UH then faces New Orleans at 11 a.m., Jan. 28 in the regular-season finale.
