New York State Girls High School Championships Feature Four State Records
BUFFALO, New York, December 2. SECTION V wound up winning the New York State Girls High School Championships with 459.50 points from Nov. 17-18.
Meanwhile, Section IV took second with 285 points, while Section II finished third with 276 points. Section VI (259) and Section XI (257.50) rounded out the top five.
The Ithaca squad of Nicole Heise, Lauren Norberg, Logan Todhunter and Lindsey Norberg started the meet off right with a state record time of 1:46.14 in the 200-yard medley relay.
Then, the Fairport foursome of Erin McGraw, Devina Tyagi, Jenna Wood and Lauren Dufault edged the state record in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a 1:37.04 to win the Public and Federation titles. That time erased the 1:37.05 set by Orchard Park in 2002.
In the 100 breast, Ithaca sophomore Lindsey Norberg cleared her own state record with a 1:02.43 to win the Public and Federation title.
Next, the Ithaca contingent of Caitlin Nicholson, Logan Todhunter, Lindsey Norberg and Emily Peck broke the state record in the 400 freestyle relay with a 3:30.13 to win the Public and Federation crowns.
Other notables included Sacred Heart freshman Emily Kelly winning the 200 free (1:50.00) and the 500 free (4:53.02) Public titles as well as the Federation title in the 200 free. Meanwhile, Fairport senior Erin McGraw also won the Public titles in the 200 free (1:50.76) and the 100 fly (55.79) as well as the Federation title in the 100 fly.
In diving action, Williamsville North junior Casey Matthews won both the Public and Federation one-meter title with 515.40 points.
