Hayden, Lochte Roll at Bell Grand Prix -- November 25, 2006
TORONTO, Ontario, November 25. Canada's Brent Hayden and the United States' Ryan Lochte highlighted the first night of action at the Bell Grand Prix, which kicked off Friday. The event, being held at the Etobicoke Olympium, features a quality lineup in short-course competition.
Hayden, among the elite freestylers in the world, lowered his own national record in the 100 freestyle by winning the discipline in 47.47, well under the 48.05 he posted in 2005. Canada's Matt Rose followed his countryman in 48.32. As for Lochte, he took top honors in the 200 backstroke with a showing of 1:54.36, easily quicker than the 1:56.86 turned in by Keith Beavers. Lochte is the world-record holder in the event.
Lochte also had a quality showing in an event that is far from a specialty when he picked up fourth place in the 100 breaststroke. Lochte was timed in 1:01.66, not far off the winning effort of Canada's Mike Brown, who touched the wall in 1:01.32. Ryan Cochrane, meanwhile, won the 800 free in 7:53.65.
For the women, Jillian Tyler of Calgary was the top finisher, thanks to a mark of 1:08.60. She was complemented as a winner by another Calgary product, Erica Morningstar, who covered the 100 freestyle in 54.39. Victoria Poon was second in 55.12. Mackenzie Dowling prevailed in the 50 fly in 27.20 and Elizabeth Wycliffe bested the field in the 200 back in 2:08.10.
Other winners were Thomas Kindler in the men's 50 butterfly (24.02), Tobias Oriwol in the men's 400 I.M. (4:16.91), Alexa Komarnycky in the women's 400 I.M. (4:41.60) and Zsofi Balazs in the 1,500 free (16:25.00).
