Texas Inks Cooper, Jostes

AUSTIN, Texas, November 9. THE University of Texas men's swimming and diving program announced Thursday the signings of diver Matthew Cooper (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman HS) and swimmer Scott Jostes (Chesterfield, Mo./Chaminade Prep) to National Letters of Intent for the 2007-08 academic year. The pair will join the Texas men's swimming and diving program in the fall of 2007.

Cooper will bring impressive junior diving credentials to Austin. A member of the USA Junior World Championship team, Cooper claimed the one-meter springboard title (489.75) and took second on the three meter (523.20) at the 2006 Speedo USA Junior National Championships.

A member of the Montgomery Dive Club, Cooper also competed at the 2006 Kaiser Permanente USA Diving National Championships, taking third on the one meter (353.85) and sixth on the three meter (402.25).

"Matt is a very strong and talented diver," said UT diving coach Matt Scoggin. "He will immediately help our team on all three boards (one meter, three meter, platform).

Jostes, the 2006 St. Louis Post-Dispatch Swimmer of the Year, placed ninth in the 100-meter backstroke at the 2006 Speedo Junior National Championships in 59.32 before recording a consolation-round time of 59.07.

Jostes also competed at the 2006 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships, taking 41st in the 100-meter backstroke in 59.10. Jostes set the Missouri high school record in the 100-yard backstroke in 50.18 and also captured the 100-yard butterfly in 50.15 at the state meet last February.

"Scott will add a lot of speed in the butterfly and the backstroke to our team next season," said UT head swimming coach Eddie Reese. "He has competed from the high school level all the way up to the senior national level. We are glad Scott will be joining us at The University of Texas."
