Big Ten Tabs Swimmers and Divers of the Week -- November 7, 2006
CHICAGO, Illinois, November 7. THE Big Ten Conference tabbed its swimmers and divers of the week on Tuesday. For the men, Northwestern's Eric Nilsson (swimmer) and Purdue's Steve LoBue (diver) garnered recognition, while Indiana's Leila Vaziri and Purdue's Carlene Takaki shared the women's swimmer of the week award. Purdue's Amanda Miller snared the women's diver accolade.
Nilsson won all three of his individual events and anchored the 200-yard freestyle relay team that took first to clinch Northwestern's victory over No. 18 Purdue on Saturday. The sophomore began the day with a 16-second victory in the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:20.18) before capturing the 200-yard butterfly (1:49.35) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:35.07). This is Nilsson's second career honor.
LoBue recorded four top-two finishes last weekend as Purdue lost close decisions at No. 20 Notre Dame and No. 8 Northwestern. Against the Irish, LoBue took first in the one-meter (321.60) before placing second in the three-meter (308.70). LoBue set a new Purdue varsity record against Northwestern on the three-meter (377.33) after taking second off the one-meter (326.10). This is LoBue's sixth career honor and Purdue's first of the season.
Vaziri posted NCAA "B" times in all three of her events as the Hoosiers defeated No. 11 Texas last weekend. The senior placed first in the 200-yard medley relay (1:42.22) and the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.07) before taking second in the 100-yard freestyle (50.39). This is Vaziri's fourth career honor and her second this season.
Takaki swept the 200- and 100-yard butterfly events in weekend duals at No. 20 Notre Dame and Northwestern, all in NCAA B-cut times. The senior won the 200-yard events in times of 2:01.48 and 2:01.25 and posted 100-yard finishes at 54.89 and 55.11. This is Takaki's first career honor.
Miller placed first in each of her four events last weekend, setting a new varsity record in the one-meter against Northwestern (332.33), topping the field by 80 points. The senior took the three-meter by 50 points (331.05) after winning both events against Notre Dame on Friday. This is Miller's third career honor.
