James Madison/Washington D.C. Protest Well Attended -- November 3, 2006

PHOENIX, Arizona, November 3. YESTERDAY, nearly 200 protestors attended a rally outside the Department of Education in Washington, D.C., to continue the fight against cuts made by James Madison University under the guise of Title IX compliance. Not only were the teams on the chopping block at the event, coaches and student-athletes from several other teams cut for the same reason, including American, George Washington, Howard, Maryland, Rutgers and William & Mary, attended the rally.

In September, JMU announced that it would eliminate 10 teams including men's swimming, five other men's teams and, amazingly, three women's programs. Ever since, JMU, along with the College Sports Council and the Independent Women's Forum, have kept up the fight to keep these teams alive. Additionally, the National Women's Law Center joined the fray.

"JMU clearly made a mistake dropping these sports," Marcia Greenberger, co-president of the National Women's Law Center, said. "[JMU] made an egregious mistake blaming [the cuts] on Title IX. It sure wasn't because of Title IX that they're dropping three women's teams. That's for sure."

After the rally, the JMU men's and women's track and field teams led all who chose to join them in a five-mile run as an added protest
