Keating Aquatics Center Dedicated

CINCINNATI, Ohio, October 21. THE Keating Aquatics Center was officially dedicated on Saturday afternoon as part of the Grand Opening Invitational in the heart of the University of Cincinnati campus.

The facility, which is in the new Campus Recreation Center, opened in February and is named after Bill Keating, Sr., who was a Bearcat student-athlete (BBA 1950, JD 1950), member of the UC Athletic Hall of Fame, a recipient of the NCAA Silver Anniversary Medal, and a former Chairman of the Board of the University of Cincinnati Board of Trustees.

More than 40 alumni swimmers were on hand for the dedication as well as the alumni meet. Last year's senior class, which included the first BIG EAST champion in school history, Ann Degenstein, was also honored prior to the meet.

The varsity meet was not scored, but the Bearcats dominated, winning 14 of the 16 unusual events. The non-traditional events included 150-yard relay events in the butterfly, breast and backstrokes as well as 300-yard medley events.

With the opening of the Keating Aquatics Center, the Bearcats will be hosting six home meets this season. In addition to the Grand Opening Invitational, UC will welcome BIG EAST foes Pittsburgh and West Virginia to campus as well as regional rivals Kentucky and Miami (Ohio).

"It is hoped that this will become a home and that will bring people to our program," said head coach Monty Hopkins. "We can build off of that. I think that opening this facility and Varsity Village will get people excited and interested in UC."
