UConn Hosts Husky Invite

STORRS, Connecticut, October 13. THE University of Connecticut Men's and Women's Swim Team successfully opened the season by taking first-place in 19 of the 24 events at the Husky Invitational on Friday at the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium. UMass, Stony Brook, Southern Connecticut and UConn all competed at the meet which was not scored.

UConn tallied a total of 13 second-place finishes and 11 third-place finishes at the meet.

Sophomore Adrian Astiz (Bethesda, Md.) led the men's team with three first-place finishes. Astiz took home first place in both the 100 and 200 butterfly events as well as a first place finish in the 200 IM.

Tristan Jones (Canberra, Australia), Abed Kaaki (Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia), Steve Kustra (North Huntington, Pa.), Nick Acquavito (Freeport, N.Y.), Frisk Driscoll (Westport, Conn.) and Mike Brocki (Westhampton, N.Y.) also added first-place finishes for the Huskies.

Leading the women winning two events each were sophomore Katie DeVinney (Avondale, Ariz.) and Kristalynn Kempton (Glen Head, N.Y.).

DeVinney took home first in the 200 butterfly and the 100 freestyle. Kempton picked up wins in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events.

The women also got wins from Danielle Sanders (Mississauga, Ontario), Emily Karel (Bethesda, Md.), Cassie Peterson (Whitefish Bay, Wis.), Lisa Shelps (Quakertown, Pa.), Courtney Haney (Mesa, Ariz.), Heather Greib (Manasquam, N.J.) and Sarah Kearns (Milford, Mass.)
