Texas Women Defeat Nebraska, 144-81 in Season Opener

LINCOLN, Nebraska, October 12. JUNIOR Mary Yarrison (Springfield, Va.) and freshman Alex Basso (Houston, Texas) collected two victories apiece Thursday evening to lead Texas (1-0) to a season-opening 144-81 victory over host Nebraska (1-1) at the Devaney Center Natatorium. The meet was the first at Texas for first-year head coach Kim Brackin and assistant coach Jim Henry.

The Longhorns opened the meet with a victory in the 400-yard medley relay, as Brown, seniors Elizabeth Tinnon (Bowling Green, Ky.) and Katie Robinson (Dillsboro, Ind.) and sophomore Hee-Jin Chang (Seoul, Korea) clocked a winning time of 3:48.22. Chang contributed the next victory for Texas in the 50 freestyle in 23.99.

Basso picked up her first collegiate victory in the 400 individual medley, touching the wall in 4:24.35. Yarrison then added her first of two victories on the evening, as she captured the one-meter diving event with a score of 278.25.

Robinson added to the Texas tally with a win in the 200 butterfly, clocking 2:04.37. Sophomore Jacqueline Martin-Lacey (Nashville, Tenn.) followed closely behind in second at 2:07.35. Basso earned her second individual victory in as many events by clocking 52.70 in the 100 freestyle. Freshman Margaret Bardin (Burlington, N.C.) took second in 53.43.

After helping the 400 medley relay to victory, Brown captured the 200 backstroke for Texas, winning in 2:02.62. Sophomore Rebecca Orr (Austin, Texas) took second in 2:06.51. Yarrison led a one-two UT finish in the three-meter diving event with a top score of 322.65. Junior Jessica Livingston (Houston, Texas) placed second at 309.68.

Sophomore Alison Soelter (Ulysses, Kan.) claimed the final individual-event victory for Texas in the 200 breaststroke, touching the wall in 2:22.00. Senior Leah Avilla (Livermore, Calif.) and sophomore Alexi Spann (Austin, Texas) completed the event as exhibitions and recorded times of 2:19.40 and 2:20.83, respectively.

With the team victory well in hand, Texas also completed the 400 freestyle relay as an exhibition. Bardin, Basso, Robinson and freshman Traci Van Matre (Spring, Texas) completed the event in 3:30.45.
