SIU at a Glance:
In its first meet of the season, the Salukis came out with a dominating performance on Sept. 30 over conference rival Evansville. The men's team won 158-81 while the women won 157-75. SIU dominated every aspect of the meet as a Saluki won each of the 26 events. For the women, freshman Therese Mattsson led the way. She won the 50 free (24.64) and the 100 free (52.48), while also swimming as part of the 200 free relay. Isabel Madeira, Danielle Quarry, Kelly Dvorak, Julie Ju and Nora Bunford followed up with two titles apiece. Madeira won the 200 free (1:53.94), Quarry won the 200 IM (2:11.50) and Ju won the 500 free (5:02.40). All three were part of the 200 free relay team. In women's diving, Cristina Curtuneanu claimed the one-meter (250.45) while Emily Gable won on the three-meter (231.80). For the men's team, Antonio Santoro, Vinicius Waked and Gareth McGee paced the Salukis with three titles each. Santoro won the 1000 free (9:36.76) and 100 fly (51.96). He was also part of the winning 200 medley relay with Case Gasparovich, Tim Silkaitis and Christopher Gaffney. Waked won the 200 free (1:40.83) and 500 free (4:37.78) while McGee won the 200 IM (1:54.97) and the 100 back (51.80). Both were members of the winning 200 free relay with Gasparovich and Stephan Ackerman. In the diving events, Kyle Carevic (235.00) won the one-meter while Andrew Flor won the three-meter (232.10).
Looking forward with SIU head coach Rick Walker:
Drury has always been a great meet for us and I think for them. We respect each other's programs and definitely don't want to lose to each other. Drury has a rich history as a Division II powerhouse, which can rival any Division I mid-major program. SIU also has had its history and continues to build on it. This year will be an extremely tough dual as Drury is very strong in both genders. We are strong on the men's side in the numbers we have and our women have great potential in their youth. It should make for an exciting event. The past couple of years have seen battles down to the last relay on both sides and I think this year could end the same way.
Drury at a Glance:
The Panthers opened the season on Oct. 7 with both the men and women placing second at the Show-Me Showdown Invitational meet. On the women's side, sophomore Janelle Slattery set a meet record in the 50 fly (26.27). Slattery, Kristie Rose, Mariana De Oliveira and Eunate Garro led Drury to a first-place finish in the 300 medley relay (2:51.53). On the men's side, freshman Yi Wen Huang set a pair of meet records in the 50 fly (22.64) and the 100 fly (49.60) and also won the 200 free (1:40.50). The Panthers 200 free relay team of Huang, Ismael Ortiz, Tomas Kuzvard and Kyle Kearbey took first with a time of 1.25.57.
Looking forward with DU head coach Brian Reynolds:
This meet is a very big meet for us. Despite being a little shallow in depth this season, we look to make it up on the front end. We will look to qualify more individuals for nationals as well, and to have a very solid meet against a quality Division I program in SIU.
