Venter Wins 200 Free at South African Short Course Champs -- September 30, 2006

PIETERMARITZBURG, South Africa, September 30. ALTHOUGH Roland Schoeman and Ryk Neethling have opted to bypass the competition, the South African Short Course Championships got off to a solid start. Leading the way was Jasper Venter, who claimed top honors in the 200 freestyle with a mark of 1:48.66. He was followed in second place by Carl Marais (1:49.90).

A member of the South African squad that raced at the World Youth Championships, Keri Shaw was the winner of the 200 butterfly with an effort of 2:10.59. At the World Youth Champs, which were held in Brazil, Shaw took a silver medal in the 100 fly. In the women’s 400 individual medley, Jessica Pengelly edged Bianca Meyer, 4:44.41-4:45.09.

In the women’s 1,500 free, Natalie du Toit was in command throughout the majority of the race, winning in a time of 16:48.55. Byron Ferguson was the victor in the men’s 400 I.M. (4:22.95).
