Lezak Takes 100 Free Title as Kerr-McGee Wraps Up -- December 19, 2005

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla., December 19. THE 14th edition of the Kerr-McGee Swim Club Elite Pro-Am concluded on Sunday night with Jason Lezak zooming to victory in the 100-yard freestyle while representing Irvine Novaquatics. The effort helped NOVA claim the team title during the four-day competition with a score of 920.5 points. Southern Methodist University finished second with 624.5 points.

The American-record holder in the 100-meter freestyle, Lezak won the yardage version of that event in convincing fashion as his clocking of 42.92 provided nearly a two-second win over Josh Baseheart, who touched the wall in 44.86. A night earlier, Lezak won the 50 freestyle after maneuvering through a shootout format that started as an eight-athlete bracket.

While Lezak completed his double in the sprints, Rachel Komisarz picked up her fourth win of the meet by besting the competition in the 200 butterfly. Komisarz checked in with a time of 1:56.22, which bettered the 1992 meet record of Summer Sanders (1:57.59). Komisarz had earlier won the 100 fly, 200 free and 500 free. Also completing a quadruple-triumph performance was Justin Mortimer, who rolled to first place in the 1,650 free (15:10.27). Mortimer also topped the field in the 500 and 1,000 freestyles and the 400 individual medley.

Adam Mania finished off his sweep of the backstroke events by taking home top honors in the 50 (22.09) and 200 (1:42.65) distances. Mania was followed in both events by Trent Staley and Ian Clark. As for the women’s back events, Morgan McGee won the 50 (26.61) and Dina Hegazy was the victor in the 200 with a mark of 2:02.31.

Other winners on the final night of action were Sachiko Yamada in the women’s 1,650 free (16:20.01) and Tara Thomas in the women’s 100 free (49.97). Samantha Woodward, representing the host club, was second in the 100 free and second in the 200 fly.

Jason Lezak qualifies first in 100 Free.
