World Championships: Shaine Casas Leads Way As USA Seek 11th Title In Men’s 200 Back

Shaine Casas set the pace in the 200 back at the Duna Arena as the United States seek to win the title for the 11th time.

Casas went 1:56.66 in the final heat ahead of Joshua Edwards-Smith of Australia (1:56.85) and Ryan Murphy (1:56.96) with the trio occupying the three top slots in qualifying.

Evgeny Rylov was conspicuous by his absence with the Russians banned until at least the end of this year following the invasion of Ukraine.

The Russian won the last two world titles with Murphy second on both occasions, the American looking up to upgrade this time around having already claimed silver in the 100 back.

Olympic and world bronze medallist Luke Greenbank went in heat two and his pacing was good, his stroke long as he touched in 1:57.33.

Fellow Briton Brodie Williams went in the following prelim and pulled out a 1:57.09 to qualify fourth.
