World Championships: Annie Lazor Disqualification Upheld; Lilly King Remains in 100 Breaststroke Final

In Sunday’s semifinals of the women’s 100 breaststroke at the World Championships, Annie Lazor of the United States was disqualified for a non-simultaneous leg movement, and although the U.S. protested that call, the decision was upheld in the FINA Court of Appeal, so Lazor will not compete in the 100 breast final. The decision means that pre-meet favorite Lilly King, Lazor’s training partner at Indiana University, will swim in the championship heat.

Lazor was the Olympic bronze medalist in the 200 breaststroke last year, but she did not qualify to swim the event at these World Championships despite swimming the third-fastest time in the world at the U.S. International Team Trials in April. Unfortunately for Lazor, King and Kate Douglass ended up with the two quicker performances as they beat her to the wall. Lazor will race in the 50 breast and 400 medley relay later in the week, but the 100-meter swim was her best shot at racing for an individual medal. It is unclear where in the race Lazor committed the stroke violation that led to her DQ.

King, meanwhile, will try to earn redemption after a rough semifinal swim where she qualified eighth in 1:06.40, more than a second off her season-best time.

Germany’s Anna Elendt qualified as the top seed into the 100 breast final, with Italy’s Benedetta Pilato and China’s Tang Qianting also swimming under 1:06 in the semifinal round.
