Fike Swim, a progressing swim product company since its signature “The Brick” kickboard was released, has recently signed 2017 World Championship bronze medalist Zane Grothe to its list of ambassadors. The announcement was made via their Facebook page:

Grothe joins a group of accomplished Fike ambassadors in World Champion Eva Fabian, Australian National Age Group Record Holder Zac Stubblety-Cook, Paralympian Lizzi Smith and Ironman Champion David Kahn.

Before reaching the podium in Budapest, Grothe was a standout swimmer at Auburn, where he holds seven school records. He is also a five-time U.S. Open Champion ranging from the 200 to 1500 meter freestyles, and is a two-time U.S. National Champion in the 400 meter free.

“Joining Fike Swim is an exciting experience for me,” Grothe said. “I’m looking forward to working with a company that has true athlete feedback and values at the core of its product research and development. Being a part of the Fike Swim ambassadors team is a step in the right direction for my career, and I can’t wait to add to their brand.”

The company has been hinting at the news for the last week, posting updates to their Facebook page:

Grothe also discussed his college experience, which swimmers he looks up to and how he trains in an interview with Fike Swim.

Q & A with Zane Grothe

Q: Who is your coach and which team do you compete for?
A: “Indiana University under Mike Westphal and Ray Looze
Q: What is your favorite event?
A: “50 free. It’s not my best so when I get to swim it there’s no pressure. Fast or slow I have a fun time doing it either way. (And I usually beat someone who I should not so that’s always fun)”
Q: How many yards per week do you train?
A: “At max volume I will be around 80k-85k yards per week.”
Q: What does an average set look like?
A: “15×200 @ 2:10 SCY, threshold, the best I’ve ever done on this set was last fall: 6×1:46, 3×1:45, 2×1:44, 3×1:43, 1×1:39”
Q: What are your goals for next season?
A: “I would like to see in-season best times multiple times, end of the season PR’s, and medals at the Pan Pacific Championships.”
Q: What are your practice goals to help you reach your race goals?
A: “Show up to every workout, and accomplish what coach tells me to do. Also better consistency with practice performance and better techniques for the range of free events I do.”
Q: Favorite dryland exercise?
A: “Bear crawls”
Q: Favorite post-workout meal?
A: “Rotini with turkey marinara sauce.”
Q: How did you get into swimming?
A: “My parents got me into swimming when I was just a baby. We had a boat and lived by a lake. Water safety classes turned into novice swim lessons, and before I knew it I was competing at World Championships.”
Q: What is something most people don’t know about you?
A: “I bet most people don’t know I rode a Razor scooter around campus for all 4 years of college. I can’t really do any tricks, but I can ride like a pro.”
Q: What was your major at Auburn?
A: “Aerospace Engineering”
Q: Who is your swimming idol?
A: “Right now it’s Caeleb Dressel. It’s almost as if he swims under the impression that he doesn’t know the fastest times in history. I feel like he has the mantra: “There’s no rules as to how fast I can go.”
Q: Who is your non-swimming idol?
A: “My old Auburn teammate TJ Leon.  He is the most generous, kind, honest man of integrity I’ve ever met.  I aim to be like him.”
