Virginia Tech Sweeps Penn State in Non-Conference Dual, Setting Four Pool Records

The Virginia Tech swimmers made their mark during their last dual meet of the season, breaking four pool records at McCoy Navatorium and adding four new top 10 times to the books. The No. 13 Hokie men won 172-121 and the No. 23 women won 155-140.

“I think we swam very well today. Overall, I think the team reacted well, we saw some promising times and the divers did very well too,” Virginia Tech coach Sergio Lopez Miro said. “We had a hard week of training and it was a great transition to taper down times for some people in preparation for the VT Invite coming up where we’re going to decide our ACC roster. It’s shaping up to be a great season for the men and the women and it’s really exciting for the team and all of the coaches.”

Virginia Tech started out the meet strong with a first place win by Will Koeppen, AJ Pouch, Youssef Ramadan and Luis Dominguez in the 400 medley relay at 3:08.81, making it in the 10th spot on the Hokies top 10 board.

Dominguez showed his speed when he broke a pool record in the 200 free with a time of 1:33.87 and later went on to break another pool record in the 500 free with a time of 4:18.17. Proving that Virginia Tech has multiple top freestyle swimmers, Mario Molla Yanes placed first in the 100 free with a time of 43.30.

Ramadan broke another pool record at McCoy Navatorium in the 50 free with a time of 19.09. Dominating the 100 fly, Ramadan broke his second pool record of the day, placing first at 44.76. Continuing the first place wins in butterfly, Virginia Tech’s Landon Gentry placed first in the 200 fly with a time of 1:44.48.

Finishing out the meet on a strong note, Virginia Tech’s Ramadan, Dominguez, Molla Yanes and Koeppen took first place in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:18.83.

On the boards, Virginia Tech’s Noah Zawadzki claimed first in the 1-meter diving event with a score of 370.88 and the 3-meter event with a score of 376.05.

For Penn State, Eduardo Cisternas won the 1000 free (8:56.63). Cooper Morley won the 100 backstroke (47.41). Mariano Lazzerini won the 100 breaststroke (54.10). Will Lulek won the 400 IM (3:52.34).

In the women’s meet, lacing first in the 400 medley relay, Virginia Tech’s Emma Atkinson, Fanni Gyurinovics, Karisa Franz and Carmen Weiler Sastre finished with a time of 3:36.46. This relay time made in the 10th spot of the Hokies top 10 board.

The Virginia Tech women later went on to claim first in the 200 free relay with Madelyn Moore, Sarah Shackelford, Weiler Sastre and Emily Claesson finishing at 1:29.29, making this relay the third top time in Hokie history. Moore’s 50 free lead-off of 22.30 made it into the fifth spot of the women’s top 10 times.

Chase Travis finished the women’s 1000 free with a time of 9:49.86. Virginia Tech’s Atkinson followed the top finishes with a first place win in the 200 free with a time of 1:45.96 and later went on to claim first in the 500 free with a time of 4:47.30. Sarah Shackelford took first place in the 100 free with a time of 49.47 and second in the 50 free with a time of 22.89.

For the Penn State women, Liv Jack won the 100 breaststroke (1:01.59). Mary Brinker won the 50 free (22.88). Daphne Wils won 1-meter diving (311.55) and 3-meter (337.73). Kylie Rydland won the 200 breast (2:15.98). Abby Henderson won the 400 IM (4:18.86).
