Virginia Swimming and Diving Press Release

The Virginia women turned in the top teams in each of day two’s seven events. The men were able to take five of the seven swims on Saturday morning.

The highlight of day two came in the 200 IM when freshman Kate Douglass (Pelham, N.Y.) turned in the second fastest time on the long course in program history, swimming a 2:13.77, just .30 seconds off the school record. Douglass won the 200 Breast on Friday and was a part of both winning 400 medley and 400 freestyle relays in the meet.

The Virginia women are currently ranked No. 4 while the men are No. 13. Wisconsin came into the meet unranked.

FROM HEAD COACH TODD DESORBO

“The team picked up where they left off last night and finished off where they started. It was great to see them race hard, strategically and focus on all the things we focus on in practice from the beginning of the meet last night, all the way through the meet today. It’s a tough turnaround in a two-day dual meet like that especially going from short course to long course. I think that the team did a good job performing and having a lot of energy all the way through.

Wisconsin is a well-coached team and they’re going to continue to get better. We’re happy that they came and competed against us. It’s good to compete against great teams and Wisconsin is a great team. We were fortunate to compete well this weekend and come out with the win.

We had a lot of great swims, a lot of wins today and we’re just excited where the team is. We’re looking forward to continuing on through the rest of the season.”

Wisconsin Press Release

After day two, the Wisconsin Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving teams fell to Virginia in their road-opening weekend meet. The women’s team finished day two of their matchup with 4th-ranked Virginia with a final score of 192-120. The men’s team was defeated 193-124 by Virginia’s 13th-ranked men.

Freshman Mikayla Seigal came through with a highlight on day two, winning the women’s 200 Fly with a time of 2:16:82. Cameron Tysoe took the top spot in the men’s 100 Back, hitting the wall at 57:01.

Senior Griffin Back won the men’s 100 Free, touching at 52:06, while Beata Nelson took second in both the 200 IM (2:19.83) and the 100 Back (1:04.30).

“This was a great early season test for our team and I’m proud of the way our athletes competed on the road. UVA is a strong program and I felt like we matched their intensity and emotion throughout the two days.

“It was great to see Tazman start us off with a win on 3-meter and then we had three seniors – Beata Nelson, Megan Doty and Cam Tysoe – win key events, including Beata’s nation-leading times in the 100 and 200 back.

Matt Novinski is really developing into a strong freestyler, and watching freshman Mikayla Seigal win the 200 fly was a real highlight for the team today. While we still have work to do, we will be better this season having experienced this competition now.” – Head Coach Yuri Suguiyama.
