Virginia Hires Reed Fujan as Associate Head Coach

The University of Virginia has hired Reed Fujan as an associate head coach for the swimming program, it announced on Tuesday.

Fujan spent the last three years in the same role at Louisville. He previously spent three seasons in the same position at Alabama.

“I want to thank Todd DeSorbo and the staff for the opportunity to be part of one of the best programs in the world,” Fujan said in a press release. “From the outside, it’s clear this team knows how to work hard and have fun, and that balance seems to be a big part of their success. I’m excited to get to Charlottesville and get to work. Go Hoos!”

Fujan’s Cardinals earned 49 All-America honors in three season, with three top-eight NCAA finishes for the women and three top-15 results for the men. The Louisville women were ACC runner-up in 2024, the program’s best finish in seven years.

Fujan helped Alabama to its best NCAAs performance in 2022, when the women took fourth place. They had been fifth the year before.

Fujan is a native of Byron, Minn., who won three Minnesota state titles before a career at Notre Dame. He was a co-captain as a senior, a three-time All-American and two-time Academic All-ACC honoree who left South Bend with the program’s second fastest 200 free time. He began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant at Indiana, then head coach of St. John’s University in 2018-19.

“We couldn’t be more excited to welcome Reed Fujan to our program,” Virginia head coach Todd DeSorbo said. “Reed has built an outstanding reputation at Louisville as both a coach and a recruiter, and his passion for developing elite swimmers is exactly what we look for on our staff. He shares the same values and commitment to excellence that have helped us build this program into what it is today. Our student-athletes are going to benefit tremendously from his experience, and I think he’s going to fit in seamlessly with our culture here at Virginia. We can’t wait to get to work.”
