USA Swimming Schedules Spring Virtual Championships for March

Following successful USA Swimming virtual competitions at the end of 2020, the national governing body has announced that it will hold a Spring Virtual Championships in March. The competition, open to 18-and-under athletes, will take place from March3-28 and provide an opportunity for developing swimmers to produce times measurable against opposition from around the nation.

Due to the COVID1-9 pandemic, parts of the country have faced greater restrictions on travel and the sizes of gatherings. While some teams and athletes have enjoyed the luxury of engaging in live meets, USA Swimming’s decision to hold another virtual competition will allow those significantly hampered by the pandemic to race in a modified format.

“The Senior Development committee has done an excellent job of working with staff to foster competitive opportunities for our 18-and-under athletes across the country,” USA Swimming Managing Director of Sport Development Joel Shinofield said. “We hope these types of national events bring together our community to create opportunities around the country to race safely, whether head-to-head or in their team’s pool.”

Racing can be conducted in athletes’ home pools, and in short-course yards and long-course meters. USA Swimming will gather times and post them on a virtual leaderboard that will enable swimmers to see where they stand in relation to their rivals. To be eligible, athletes must be 18-and-under as of March 3, 2021.
