The University of Scranton men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams were reinstated, but will remain on probation, as of Tuesday, according to the school’s student run newspaper, The Aquinas.

On February 10, the teams were suspended due to alleged violations of Title IX and “The University’s hazing, sexual harassment and sexual misconduct and alcohol policies.” Consequently, the team’s season ended abruptly, as the squad was not allowed to compete in the Landmark Conference Championship at the end of that week.

Tuesday night the team’s suspension was lifted, in a meeting where the swimmers and divers saw their coaches for the first time since February.

In an email to the community on Wednesday, the University announced the conclusion of its investigation, and said that, “In accordance with the Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA), the University cannot and will not discuss the status or outcomes of conduct cases for individual students.”

The email also reported that in Tuesday’s meeting Athletic Director David Martin discussed the investigation, along with “positive and safe ways for the teams to move forward that are consistent with the University’s Catholic and Jesuit values.”

During the team’s year long probation of the 2016-2017 season, they will participate in community service, including Special Olympics events and Relay for Life.

In the past several weeks, some team members have received individual punishments, under other Title IX and hazing and alcohol policy investigations, according to the school paper.

Western Kentucky University President and Athletic Director please take note. You do not throw away an entire program based on the alleged actions of a few. Especially when you allowed the supposed indiscretions to occur on your watch.

In addition, it is still baffling that the center of all the controversy walked and received a degree and handshake from President Gary Ransdell from WKU last May after the 5 years suspension was enacted in April. Moreover, the Coach was paid until June when his contract just expired. He was not terminated by AD Todd Stewart!?!?
