UNC Announces Captains For 2016-2017 Season

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of North Carolina men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs have elected their 2016-17 team captains as announced by UNC head swimming coach Rich DeSelm.

Sophomore Caroline Baldwin of Westfield, N.J. and junior Hellen Moffitt of Alexandria, Va., have been chosen as the co-captains of the women’s team for next season.

Junior Matt Conway of Grayslake, Ill., and junior Jack Nyquist of Alpharetta, Ga., have been elected as co-captains of the 2016-17 men’s squad.

Baldwin is coming off a tremendous sophomore campaign during which she earned honorable mention All-America honors in the 200-yard medley, 400-yard medley, 200-yard freestyle and 400-yard freestyle relays. During 2015-16, she helped establish school records in the 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays. At the ACC Championships, she finished fourth in the 100-yard backstroke, seventh in the 50-yard freestyle and ninth in the 100-yard freestyle. She also swam on the 200-yard freestyle and 400-yard freestyle relays which reached the awards podium with bronze medal finishes.

Moffitt excelled in 2015-16, taking home first-team All-America honors in the 100-yard butterfly with a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Championships. She also swam on 200-yard and 400-yard medley relays which merited honorable mention All-America honors at the NCAA meet. Moffitt established school records as a junior in the 100-yard butterfly, 100-yard backstroke, 200-yard backstroke and as a member of the 200-yard medley relay. At the ACC Championships she ascended the awards podium in three events – taking second in the 100 fly, third in the 100 back and third in the 200 fly.

Conway had his best season to date as a Tar Heel in 2015-16. She earned a spot on the ACC Championships scoring team and notched points for the Tar Heel team in all three of his events. He took 13th in the 100-yard butterfly, 13th in the 200-yard butterfly and 14th in the 500-yard freestyle. In the process, he set career best times in all three events.

Nyquist, a tremendous ACC and national performer in his freshman and sophomore years, took his game to a whole new level as a junior this past year. He finished as the ACC Championships runner-up in both the one-meter and three-meter diving competition. He then went on to take sixth in three-meter diving at the NCAA Championships. In the process, he became the first Tar Heel diver to earn first-team All-America honors since 1957. Nyquist set career best scores in both one-meter and three-meter, breaking his own school record in the one-meter event.
