TYR Pro Series: Lilly King, Michael Andrew Storm to 100 Breaststroke Wins; Katie Ledecky Dazzles in 400 Freestyle

The 100-meter breaststroke events on the second day of the USA Swimming TYR Pro Series stop in Westmont supplied entertaining performances, with Lilly King and Michael Andrew claiming victories. Meanwhile, distance legend Katie Ledecky put together another tremendous outing, winning the 400 freestyle in dominant fashion.

In the women’s 100 breaststroke, King led three athletes under the 1:07 barrier and narrowly prevailed behind a time of 1:06.24. The 2016 Olympic champion in the event, King surged to the front of the field on the strength of a 31.08 front half and fended off Annie Lazor (1:06.48) down the stretch, with 2020 Olympic champ Lydia Jacoby placing third in 1:06.87.

An event later, Andrew and Nic Fink each dipped under a minute in the men’s 100 breast. Andrew put together a strong showing of 59.05, which handed the multi-event standout a half-second triumph over Fink, who was timed in 59.55. Andrew left little doubt concerning the outcome when he delivered an opening 50 meters of 27.47, which was nearly a second clear of Fink and left too much room to make up on the return lap.

One night after winning the 1500 freestyle with a top-15 performance of all-time, Ledecky put together a 4:01.30 effort in the 400 freestyle to beat Leah Smith. Ledecky was in command after a 58.32 split over the first 100 and came through the midway point of the race in 1:59.39. While Ledecky claimed most of the attention, Smith’s second-place time of 4:04.73 is an excellent sign that the veteran of numerous international meets is staring at a big season and will be a factor in the chase for bids to the World Championships.

Best known for his prowess in the backstroke events, Shaine Casas claimed a surprise victory in the 100 freestyle when he clocked in at 49.29, ahead of the 49.37 turned in by Maxime Rooney for runnerup honors. Ryan Held followed in third in 49.40 while Olympic champion Caeleb Dressel finished fourth in 49.54. With Casas going 49-low, there will be greater anticipation surrounding his upcoming efforts in the 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke, his best events.

Erika Brown was quickest in the women’s 100 freestyle. Brown touched the wall in 54.13 to finish ahead of Abbey Weitzeil (54.53). Meanwhile, the 200 butterfly races went to Hali Flickinger in 2:06.87 and Italian Federico Burdisso, a star at Northwestern who went 1:57.83. Egypt’s Marwan El Kamash won the 400 freestyle in 3:50.59.
