TYR Pro Series: In Return Meet, Katie Ledecky Cruises to Triumph in 400 Freestyle
A year away from competition hasn’t changed much for Katie Ledecky. One night after making her competitive return with a win in the 1500 freestyle, Ledecky claimed a comfortable triumph in the 400 freestyle at the TYR Pro Series stop in San Antonio. Ledecky stopped the clock in 4:05.00, which was slightly off her prelim time of 4:04.72, but having two performances in that range in early March is a good sign for the reigning Olympic champion.
Following her race, Ledecky talked about the process of returning to racing and seeing some familiar faces on the deck who she hasn’t seen due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Nonetheless, Ledecky still managed to produce quality times, including her mark in the final that provided a 2.41-second decision over fellow Team USA member Leah Smith (4:07.41).
Ledecky has not eased back into racing, but instead has taken on a full program through the first two days of the meet. In addition to winning the 1500 free and 400 free, Ledecky went sub-55 in the 100 freestyle to place third in that event. Following Smith to the wall was Emma Weyant in 4:09.22. At the United States Olympic Trials, Weyant is expected to challenge for a Tokyo berth in the 400 individual medley.
In the men’s race, Egypt’s Marwan El Kamash was the top finisher, going 3:50.05 to easily top Germany’s Jacob Heidtmann (3:53.80). Jordan Wilimovsky was the top American finisher, clocking 3:55.03.
