Sydney Sprints (SC): Cody Simpson’s Attack Mentality Earns Him A Second National Title in the 100m Butterfly

An attack mentality from Cody Simpson has seen the 24-year-old Gold Coat-based Olympic hopeful tear up the pool for his second National title in two nights on day three at the Australian Short Course Championships in Sydney.

Simpson (Griffith University, QLD) led from start to finish to win the 100m butterfly in 50.60 (10.88, 23.52, 36.76) to add to his 100m freestyle win from last night.

The high profile pop star has been one of the star attractions at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre this week and he kept two-time Olympian David Morgan (Surfers Paradise, QLD) 50.76 and Alex Quach (SOPAC, NSW) 50.97 at bay in a blanket finish.

And he has let his swimming do the singing off a song sheet he hopes will earn him a place one the 2024 Olympic team to Paris.

Simpson then spoke of his determination to get the absolute best out of his  training and attacking his races.

“I’ve adopted an attack mentality, aiming to leave nothing in the tank and to just see what happens,” Simpson told Olympian Sarah Ryan on 9Now.

“I’m a student of the sport every single day, with my coach (Michael Bohl) and my team helping me improve in whatever area I can and there’s tonnes more I can learn and improve on.

“And I’m here to put everything I do in training into my racing.”

Simpson will now turn his attention to the 2023 World Cup Series which will be held entirely in Europe next month.

Meanwhile, University of Queensland’s S14 Para swimmer Jack Ireland set his second world record of meet – clocking 51.11 in the MC 100m freestyle with Callum Simpson (Flinders Phoenix, QLD) second in 58.41 and Declan Budd (Knox Pymble, NSW) third in 53.74.

Ireland had opened proceedings on night one with a new world mark in the 200m freestyle.

The women’s 100m butterfly saw Canberra-based Abbey Webb (Cruiz, ACT) add title number three after her victories in the 200m freestyle and 200m backstroke – winning tonight’s final in 58.57 ahead of Isabella Osborn (MLC Aquatic, VIC) 59.62 and Rafaela Kopellou (SOPAC, NSW) 59.64.

And in one of the best races of the night saw Olympic teammates Tamsin Cook (Melbourne Vicentre, VIC) 4:04.44 and Madeleine Gough (Carlile, NSW) fight it out in the 400m freestyle – Cook overtaking Gough with 50m to go to take the title by just 0.31 after 16 laps. Adriana Fydler (Miami, QLD) added bronze to her 200m backstroke silver from night two in 4:09.08.

While in the men’s 400m freestyle, it was Thomas Hauck (All Saints, QLD) adding title number three to the 100m and 200m backstroke wins.

After the first 100m, Hauck was never headed to take the title in 3:43.36 from European champion Luc Kroon(Netherlands) 3:46.73 and Koby Bujak-Upton (Knox Pymble, NSW) 3:48.77 hanging on for third.

It was an encouraging night for the son and daughters of four Olympians.

Fydler, the daughter of Olympic parents Chris Fydler (1992, 1996, 2000) and Rosie Brown (1980), Bujak-Upton the son of Simon Upton (1988) and  Chloe Douglas-Byrne, the 16-year-old daughter of Dimity Douglas (1984) finishing second in the Age final in the 100m butterfly after her fifth placing in the 100m freestyle final last night.
