Today marks the world debut of Spindrift Beck’s podcast entitled Swimcerely With Spindrift. In this first episode, Beck talks with one of the most recognizable people in the sport of swimming – Felicia Lee, also known as Flee.

Lee has been on the international and national scene with her top swims coming at the 2015 World University Games, where she won gold in the 400-meter free relay and bronze in the 400-meter medley relay.  She also won silver in the 200-meter medley relay at the 2014 FINA Short Course World Championships. Lee also won the 2014 NCAA title in the 100-yard fly.

Lee, who swam collegiately at Stanford after swimming club at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club under Paul Yetter and Bob Bowman, is currently pursuing a professional swimming career.

Swimcerely with Spindrift is a podcast that showcases conversations with high school, collegiate, pro, and Olympic swimmers’ about their likes, dislikes, career, goals, and more. Each episode centers on a different swimmer, giving a behind-the-scenes look at what makes these athletes tick and, in some cases, what separates them as some of the best swimmers in the world.

“My favorite podcasts are ones that feature actors, writers, and comedians speaking not just about their craft but about their favorite restaurants, TV shows, telling funny stories, etc. With 2016 fast approaching, I wanted to try to bring that sort of format to swimming, so that fans can have a new type of unfiltered access to their favorite swimmers. The show is meant to be off-the-cuff, goofy, and a little different. Hopefully people will enjoy!” – Spindrift Beck

Swimcerely Sycophantic? 😉 Seriously though, I fast-forwarded a few times and still only made it half-way. There may have been much better stuff later on. At the risk of sounding sexist, I’m going to go out on a limb and say this particular podcast will appeal much more to women than men. Which is fine, and good, we need that perspective. Just not my cup of tea personally. Just my two cents. I did love the informality and spontaneity, and the audio format that allowed me to do other things while listening. But I wanted to hear more about Flee’s swimming career specifically, which sounded interesting. Again, maybe that came later on. I’m willing to keep listening though to see what happens. I like creative endeavors and glad SW is trying something new.

The “OFF THE WALL” podcast you guys used to do was real good radio… this… not so much. NIce to see the idea returning but would have prefered the old show and hosts and format make a comeback instead.

Very entertaining interview, and I look forward to hearing more. As podcasts go, this one seems to differentiate itself from others (although I personally don’t know of any swimming oriented podcasts) by Spindrift’s obvious “insider info”, as she is clearly close friends with the guest. My assumption is that she will continue to interview swimming friends, former teammates and colleagues, and also current stars who emerged after her retirement from the sport. I especially enjoyed the reminiscences and stories, as anyone in the sport for long (and certainly retired swimmers) realizes that memories made are as important as titles won. I think it would be cool if she were to interview some Masters stars as well.

I loved this! It was a natural, free-flowing conversation that created a true picture of Flee. I enjoyed Spindrift’s engaging turn of phrase and ability to let the interviewee be relaxed and be themselves. More like these, please!
