China, Japan and Australia have all declared their teams for the 2016 Perth Aquatic Super Series set to take place next month in Australia.  Sun Yang and Ye Shiwen are the two headliners for the Chinese squad.

Swimming Australia Press Release:

Dual London Olympic gold medallists Sun Yang and Ye Shiwen will headline a 24-strong Chinese National team announced today for next month’s 2016 Perth Aquatic Super Series against the Australian Dolphins and Japan.

The 2012 Olympic champions will be major international drawcards for the first international hit-out of the year, en-route to the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The pair will join Australia’s reigning world champions Emily Seebohm, Bronte Campbell and Mitch Larkin along with Japanese stars – two-time Olympic medallist Takuro Fujii and women’s World championship breaststroke medallist Rio Kaneto.

Seebohm, Campbell and Larkin will be joined by 2013 World Champion Cate Campbell and fellow 2015 Kazan medallists Cameron McEvoy, Madi Wilson, Jess Ashwood and Mack Horton in an exciting Australian line up.

“I love racing internationally and it is even better when it’s on home soil,” said Cate Campbell.

“I’d never really understood home ground advantage before we went to Perth for the first time a couple of years ago.

“To hear the crowd roaring for you and not the person next to you does give you a lift and standing there with everyone cheering for you is definitely very very special.

“It’s a great way to start the year, we are going to have some tough competition and everyone is racing not just for themselves but for the team.

“I think that is really important if you are personally stinging a little bit and you want to find that little bit extra because you are going to be helping out your team.

“You are swimming for the Australian Dolphins it’s a great team bonding experience.

“It’s quite a small Australian team with a few new faces on it which will be really exciting; blooding some new athletes will be great especially in the lead up to an Olympic Games.”

Australia has named a team of experienced Olympians and world champions along with a select band of rising stars, including breaststrokers Matthew Wilson and Georgia Bohl and medley man Justin James.

The three-way international meet will be swum over two days, on February 5 and 6 at Perth’s HBF Stadium with tickets available through Ticketmaster.

Sun became China’s first male Olympic gold medallist when he won the 400 and 1500m freestyle in London four years ago while Ye, just 16, won double gold in the 200 and 400m individual medley.

Just last year Sun, the world record holder for 1500m freestyle, took his overall FINA World Championship gold medal tally to seven, when he won the 400 and 800m freestyle double in Kazan.

Sun will race Australia’s young gun, Mack Horton (who won bronze behind the Chinese super-swimmer over the 800m in Kazan) over both the 400 and 1500m freestyle.

Horton will have his first major competitive hit-out at this week’s Victorian State Championships at the Melbourne Sports And Aquatic Centre, starting Friday as will Larkin and fellow Perth-bound Dolphins Emma McKeon, Georgia Bohl and Madi Wilson

Ye competed at last year’s Kazan World Championships and finished eighth in the 200m individual medley and will face Australian pair Keryn McMaster and Tessa Wallace.

Japan has also named a 24-member team of 13 men and 11 women, to be led by two-time Olympic relay medallist from 2008 and 2012, Fujii.

The star sprint butterfly-freestyler, was a member of the Japanese silver medal-winning 4 x 100 medley relay in London 2012 and bronze in the same medley relay in Beijing in 2008.

Kaneto is one of the world’s best female 200m breaststrokers, winning silver in the 2014 FINA World Short Course Championships and silver in the Pan Pacs on the Gold Coast in the same year.

She was a close up sixth in last year’s Fina World Championship final with just two seconds separating the first six places – an event which saw a triple dead-heat for third.

Kaneto will line up against Australian pair, Commonwealth Games gold medallist Taylor McKeown and London Olympian Tessa Wallace.

Other standouts include Chinese trio:

· Established Hao Yun (Events: 200, 400m freestyle): A member of the silver medal-winning 4x200m freestyle relay team who finished fourth in the 400m freestyle at the 2012 London Olympics.
