Summer McIntosh Wraps Up Historic Canadian Trials with 200 Free WJR

Few swimmers have put together a meet like Summer McIntosh this week at Bell Canadian Trials, and she added another best time Sunday night to close it out.

McIntosh went 1:53.91 to re-set her Canadian and world junior records in the 200 free. It’s her fifth national and world junior record this week to go with world records in the 400 IM and 400 free. She also buzzes within a second of Federica Pellegrini’s enduring world record of 1:52.98 from 2009. It’s the No. 5 time all time, improving her national and WJR from 1:54.13.

McIntosh’s splits:

21 McIntosh, Summe 06 UNCAN/SYS-FL 1:57.17 1:53.91n 975
    r:+0.69 27.02 55.58 (28.56)
        1:24.87 (29.29) 1:53.91 (29.04)

She is one of three swimmers to get under the A cut, which bodes well for the Canadians in what is on paper their weakest women’s relay. Mary-Sophie Harvey went 1:58.40, .06 up on Ella Jansen. Both should be in the relay picture this summer, along with Penny Oleksiak (if she recovers from her knee injury) and Taylor Ruck (who passed on trials but will still be up for selection if she’s able to compete this summer.)

Also on the final day of competition at the Toronto Pan-Am Sports Centre:

Joshua Liendo added another national record to his haul by going 23.27 in the 50 fly. That downed the 2015 mark set by Santo Condorelli at 23.27. Ilya Kharun was second in 23.42.

Javier Acevedo added another win to his tally by going 1:47.72 in the 200 free. It’s outside the FINA A cut and was six-tenths up on Patrick Hussey.

Katerine Savard finished seventh in the 200 free and turned around to win the 50 fly in 26.56. She edged Kylie Masse by .03 seconds.

Mabel Zavaros capped a solid week by winning the 800 free in 8:38.17. That drops 3.99 seconds off her seed time, but it’s still .27 seconds back of the FINA A cut. Kathryn Hazle was second with teen Ella Cosgrove third.

Eric Brown won the men’s 1,500 free in 15:26.85, nine seconds slower than his seed time and well outside the FINA A cut. Alex Axon was second.
