Evan Holder, Anna Wisniewski Help JHU Beat Stevens

The Johns Hopkins men and women Blue Jays defeated the Stevens Institute Ducks on Saturday.

Men’s Meet:

The Blue Jays are ranked sixth in the CSCAA’s latest poll, ahead of Stevens (11th). The Blue Jays scored 151 points to the Duck’s 103.

Evan Holder lead the way, posting three individual wins for JHU. Holder was a part of JHU’s winning 200 medley relay. He was joined by teammates Darren LohMark Wilson, and Michael Ashmead as the quartet posted a time of 1:34.50. Stevens’ Ravi SunJoshua LefeberAusten Young, and Tommy Wolinski were only .07 seconds behind.

Holder dominated the 100 breaststroke, finishing with a 56.92. His teammate, Scott Sterrett was second (59.46), just ahead of Stevens’ Lefeber (59.68).

In the 100 freestyle, Holder lead a JHU sweep with his time of 46.53. Ashmead swam a 47.55 and Jeremy Bauchwitz was third (48.43).

Holder’s 100 butterfly margin of victory was slimmer, finishing in a time of (51.37) while Young touched in a 51.57. Vinny Tavoletti was third (52.76).

Sun was dominant for the Ducks, despite the team’s loss. The senior won the 100 and 200 backstrokes and the 200 IM. In the 100 backstroke, Sun posted a time of 52.19. JHU’s Emile Kuyl and Jan Hagemeister were second (52.36) and third (52.37). In the 200 backstroke, Sun raced to a 1:54.64. JHU took second and third as Loh and Patrick Flynn posted times of 1:55.63 and 1:57.49.

Sun’s 200 IM time of 1:55.90 was just ahead of two JHU swimmers. Wilson and Kuyl placed second and third (1:56.92 and 1:58.04).

JHU won every other event in the afternoon. Andrew Greenhalgh won the 1000 by nearly 30 seconds. His time of 9:29.38 lead a JHU sweep as Billy Gravely and Erik Bostrom touched in 9:54.21 and 9:57.68. Greenhalgh also won the 500 freestyle (4:38.50). Teammate Kyle Otazu was second (4:41.72) and Stevens’ Connor Harrigan finished third (4:54.39).

The Blue Jays also swept the 200 freestyle and 200 butterfly. In the 200 freestyle Otazu, John Chu, and Davis Knox raced to times of 1:42.38, 1:44.22, and 1:46.76. In the 200 butterfly, Wilson lead the way (1:53.98). Michael Wohl was not far behind in a 1:54.95. Austin Wilson touched third (2:00.89).

Ashmead earned an individual win, finishing the 50 freestyle in a time of 21.45. Teammate Jeremy Bauchwitz swam a 21.95 for second place. Stevens’ Tommy Wolinski touched third (22.03).

In the 200 breaststroke, JHU’s Scott Sterrett and Colby Yu finished 1-2 in times of 2:07.98 and 2:14.04. The Ducks’ Alex Chen was third (2:15.27).

JHU’s Ashmead, Bauchwitz, Otazu, and Wohl won the 400 freestyle relay, stopping the clock in 3:08.78.

Women’s Meet:

The fifth ranked Johns Hopkins women topped the 16th ranked Stevens team by a score of 157-97. The Blue Jays saw multiple swimmers post multiple wins on the afternoon and the team did not lose a single event.

The JHU women got off to a quick start as the team of Shirley ChanGwynnie LaMastraAnna Wisniewski, and Lena Bless posted a top time of 1:49.68 in the 200 medley relay.

JHU’s Courtney Cowan claimed the 1,000 freestyle (10:42.33) nearly 30 seconds ahead of Stevens’ Elizabeth Heinbach (11:07.41). Elizabeth Duncan (11:28.00) finished third.

Cowan also went on to win the 500 in a time of 5:13.61. Her teammate Rabia Syed touched second (5:22.84) while Heinbach was third (5:26.40).

The Blue Jays’ Kaitlin Jones dominated the 200 freestyle, stopping the clock in a time of 1:56.62. The race for second was close, as Lindsay Kriz (2:00.45) out touched the Ducks’ Courtney Jones (2:00.66).

JHU’s Jones also topped the 50 freestyle and the 200 breaststroke. In the 50, she touched the wall in 24.98 seconds. Her teammate Bless was second (25.79). Stevens’ Jenn Rutledge finished third (26.96).

In the 200 breaststroke. Jones won with a 2:25.97, over three seconds before teammate Sara Wujciak (2:29.00). Stevens’ Kate Prescott rounded out the top three (2:34.92).

JHU’s dominance continued as Wisniewski lead a sweep of the 100 backstroke. She stopped the clock at 59.28, ahead of teammates Kristen Kaiser (1:03.47) and Ariana Waitkavicz (1:04.36). The Blue Jay also topped the 200 backstroke (2:08.74). She was well ahead of Kaiser (2:15.11) and Sarah Hoogenboom (2:16.90).

Wisniewski’s final victory of the day came in the 200 IM (2:08.85), where she was twelve seconds ahead of the next swimmer. Katlyn Christenson (2:20.46) was second and Tori Glascock was third (2:22.92).

The Blue Jays’ LaMastra won two individual events of her own. In the 100 breaststroke, she stopped the clock in 1:06.13. Wujciak finished in a 1:09.41. Stevens’ Elena Piper touched third (1:12.56).

LaMastra claimed the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.44. Bless touched second (55.62). The Ducks’ Jones placed third (55.65).

In the 200 butterfly, Abigail Brown stopped the clock in a 2:08.39, just before her teammate Chan (2:08.81). Heinbach was third (2:15.49). Chan claimed the 100 butterfly (59.31) just ahead of Stevens’ Sarah Jurczyk (59.70). Abigail Brown was also under a minute, posting a 59.87 for third.

The Blue Jays finished the day with the 400 freestyle relay as the team of Jones, Bless, LaMastra, and Cowan stopped the clock in a 3:39.40.
