Stanford Men Defeat Cal in Last Relay for Dual Meet Victory

The California Golden Bears have looked like one of the top men’s teams in the nation all season, as they have been for the entirety of Dave Durden’s tenure in Berkeley, but in the final dual meet of this season, the cross-bay Stanford Cardinal edged out Cal in an intense dual meet.

Stanford led 140-137 going into the meet-ending 400 free relay, and Stanford’s Andrei Minakov dove in for the anchor leg just a tenth ahead of Cal’s Daniel Carr. Minakov then split 41.65 to pull away and secure the win, while Cal was disqualified after a false start by Carr, and Stanford won the meet by a final score of 153-141.

Leon MacAlisterLuke Maurer and Jonathan Affeld also swam on that winning relay for Stanford, which touched in 2:49.59, and two of those three swimmers earned individual victories during the meet. MacAlister won the 100 back in 46.07, and he also placed second in the 200 back in 1:40.28, while Affeld touched out Cal’s Gabriel Jett to win the 200 fly, 1:41.41 to 1:41.50.

Additionally for Stanford, sixth-year swimmer Grant Shoults put up a time of 8:46.79, the fourth-best mark in the nation this season, to win the 1000 free, while Preston Forst won the 500 free of 4:14.10, defeating Cal’s Sean Grieshop (4:14.84). Cal did not enter any divers, and Stanford’s Connor Casey won both the 1-meter (405.38) and 3-meter (443.93) events.

For Cal, Bjorn Seeliger won the 50 free in 19.08 and the 100 free in 41.78, and Trenton Julian placed first in the 200 fly in 1:33.13. Seeliger also anchored Cal’s 200 medley relay to a come-from-behind win with his 18.47 anchor split.

Destin Lasco won the 200 back in 1:39.64. Lasco was the runnerup in the 200 back at the NCAA Championships, and he was just off his top-ranked time in the nation, 1:39.24. In the 200 IM, Cal’s Hugo Gonzalez finished just three hundredths ahead of Lasco, 1:42.16 to 1:42.19.
