Sierra Schmidt Makes Cross Country Move From Michigan to Arizona

World University Games bronze medalist and NCAA All-American Sierra Schmidt announced Monday she was moving out west to Arizona to continue her career as a professional athlete.

Schmidt swam four years at the University of Michigan where she was third this past year at NCAAs in the 1650 and fourth in the 500 freestyle. She will be moving to Scottsdale, which is just down the road from Arizona State University where coach Bob Bowman is based. Schmidt previously swam with Bowman at North Baltimore Aquatic Club in the lead-up to the 2016 Olympic Trials. She was the gold medalist in the 800 free at the 2015 Pan American Games and 2015 World Juniors and also won two silvers in the 400 and 1500 free at those junior worlds.

While at Michigan, Sierra Schmidt won back to back bronzes in the 400 freestyle at the 2017 & 2019 World University Games for the United States. She was also a member of Michigan’s 800 free relay that won the Big Ten title in 2021. Schmidt hasn’t raced much long course since late 2019, but she will be a factor in the 400, 800 and 1500 freestyle at the Olympic Trials. She has been as high as sixth in the nation in the 800 and 1500 free since 2018, and is also ranked 10th in the 400 free during that span.
