Senior Day Success For California Over Arizona State

On Senior Day in Berkeley, California, the No. 2/No. 7 Golden Bear men and women grabbed convincing victories over the unranked Arizona State Sun Devils. After defeating Arizona at home just the day before, California kept the momentum going as the No. 2 men defeated Arizona State 183-107, while the No. 7 women took the meet with a final score of 181-98.

Men’s Meet:

The Golden Bears started off in convincing fashion as they took the top two spots in the 200 medley relay. The A team of Ryan Murphy, Connor Hoppe, Josh Prenot, and Justin Lynch claimed first (1:26.98) and the B team of Jacob Pebley, Carson Sand, Long Gutierrez, and Tyler Messerschmidt followed with a time of 1:28.87. Arizona State’s A team of Richard Bohus, Christian Lorenz, Tadas Duskinas, and Patrick Park were third (1:28.94). A pair of Golden Bears then took the top two spots in the 1000 free. Junior Janardan Burns nabbed first (9:21.88), while freshman Ken Takahashi was second (9:25.75). Arizona State’s senior Juan Tolosa finished third (9:29.40).

A California sweep–led by senior Trent Williams (1:37.01)–in the 200 free followed. Second was claimed by the junior Murphy (1:37.03), while the senior Pebley took third with a 1:37.24. The senior Prenot then edged out Arizona State’s junior Bohus in the 100 back. Prenot was a 48.73, while Bohus touched in 49.11. The California sophomore Hoppe claimed the 100 breast (54.44), over a second ahead of Arizona State sophomore Lorenz (55.53). California’s junior Gutierrez added another event win for the Golden Bears with his victory over the Sun Devils’ sophomore Park in the 200 fly. Gutierrez was a 1:45.50, while Park touched with a 1:46.82.

Senior Messerschmidt won the 50 free (20.36) for California and was followed by Arizona State’s junior Duskinas (20.48). The California sophomore Lynch, who was third in the 50, grabbed the win in the 100 free (44.70), just one one-hundredth ahead of Arizona State’s Bohus (44.71). Pebley was the next Golden Bear to log an individual event, and he did it in convincing fashion. His 1:42.45 in the 200 backstroke was over five second ahead of second-place finisher Barkley Perry, the Arizona State junior. Prenot then doubled in equally convincing fashion–1:55.69 in the 200 breaststroke. Not only was it the only sub-2:00 swim of the field, he beat the Arizona State sophomore Lorenz by over five seconds.

California then swept the 500 free. Freshman Nick Norman‘s 4:28.82 was first, the sophomore Ryan Cao was second with a 4:29.67, and Burns’s 4:33.63 was good enough for third. California’s Murphy and Prenot then went 1-2 in the 100 fly, with time of 46.95 and 47.39 respectively. The freshman Andrew Seliskar added the 400 IM to the list of California’s victories with his 3:53.42. The meet was closed out by Arizona State’s win in the 400 free relay, with a squad of Park, Bohus, Duskinas, and Perry going a 3:00.11. Both boards were won by Arizona State sophomore David Hoffer.

Women’s Meet:

The California women were just as successful as the men’s team and started the meet off in equally convincing fashion with the top two spots in the 200 medley relay. The A team of Rachel Bootsma, Marina Garcia Urzainqui, Farida Osman and Amy Bilquist took the event in a 1:39.92 and the B team of Kathleen Baker, Celia Li, Noemie Thomas, and Rachael Acker followed with a 1:41.01. The Arizona State team of Ingibjorg Jonsdottir, Marlies Ross, Marina Spadoni, and Alysha Bush were third (1:44.09). The California senior Kelly Naze then won the 1000 free with the only time under 10:00 in the field (9:59.09), which was over 17 seconds faster than Arizona State’s junior Anna Olasz, who claimed second with a 10:17.39.

The California senior Acker claimed the 200 free (1:47.95), just five one-hundredths ahead of her freshman teammate Baker (1:48.00). The freshman Bilquist and the senior Liz Pelton went 1-2 in the 100 back, going 52.34 and 54.09 respectively. Junior Golden Bear Garcia Urzainqui took the top spot in the 100 breast (1:03.62) and was followed by the Arizona State freshman Kaya Philapil (1:04.62). California then swept the 200 fly–junior Li was first (2:00.92), the senior Bootsma was second (2:01.66), and sophomore Jasmine Mau came back strong for a third place finish (2:04.46).

Junior Osman added to the win column for California with her 22.83 in the 50, half a second ahead of Arizona State’s junior Bush (23.30). Osman and Bush then went 1-2 again in the 100 free, going 49.97 and 50.51 respectively. Bilquist claimed a second individual win with her 1:55.44 in the 200 back, over five seconds ahead of Arizona State’s senior Jennifer Morgan (2:01.39). Li also claimed a second individual win in the 200 breast (2:17.79). Baker joined the multi-win group with her 4:51.58 victory in the 500 free. Arizona State’s junior Kat Simonovic was second with a 5:00.04. The California sophomore Thomas then claimed the 100 fly with a 53.26.

Naze won one more with her 4:14.76 in the 400 IM, while the California team of Baker, Valerie Hull, Osman, and Bilquist closed the meet out with a 3:21.31 victory in the 400 free relay, ahead of the Arizona team of Bush, Jonsdottir, Krista Kolkabeck, and Simonovic (3:28.39). California senior diver Anne Kastler claimed the victory on the 3-meter board, while Arizona State’s sophomore Mara Aiacoboae was second. The pair then swapped places on the 1-meter board.
