A few months ago Joseph Schooling became the first person to receive a sizable monetary award from the Singapore Swimming Association when he became the first swimming Olympian to take home a gold medal. Schooling topped a loaded field in finals of the men’s 100-meter fly to earn a S$1 million reward (approximately U.S. $704,895.61).

The Schooling family has been putting the award money to good use, recently donating S$200,000 to the Singapore Swimming Association in an effort to help fund and develop aquatic sports in Singapore.

The award, which comes as a part of the Singapore National Olympic Council’s Multi-Million Dollar Award Programme (MAP Awards), has a condition which requires a mandatory 20 per cent donation to the athletes national sport association. The MAP Awards reward Singapore athletes who earn medals at major competitions, including the Olympics, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, and Southeast Asian Games.

Currently referred to as the Sustainability, Growth, and People Fund (SGP Fund), the Schooling’s donation joins a contribution of S$525,100 from a golf fundraiser headlined by Joseph during a trip home in November 2016.

While there Schooling used his personal journey as inspiration for needing greater support for up-and-coming athletes, a journey that has included moving to the USA for Schooling to attend the Bolles School in Florida, before the University of Texas.

May Schooling commented,

We’re trying to change the landscape of how sports should be. We are honored to have the opportunity to give back to the association, and have Joseph leave a legacy for aspiring athletes. We hope that this will be a form of inspiration and encouragement for our local athletes to excel in the sport and achieve great results for our nation.

An independent committee is being set up by the SSA to watch over the new fund consisting of people from inside and outside of the swimming community. SSA President Lee Kok Choy explained that this will be to ensure neutrality of the committee so that all decision are made in a “fair and transparent manner.”

Choy added,

The amount donated by the Schoolings is unprecedented and will help in the development of the sport, from long-term athlete development to enhancing the standard of coaching. We appreciate the Schoolings’ support and will have regular meetings with them to account for their donation.”

More information on the make-up of the committee and how the funds will be administered as expected to be revealed as early as next month.
