Rie Kaneto Leads 100 Breast Field After Day 2 Prelims At Japanese Nationals

The second day of the Japanese Olympic Trials saw some quick prelims times with Kosuke Hagino, the winner of the 400-meter IM, posting the top time in the men’s 200-meter free. Hagino stopped the clock at 1:47.16 to claim the top seed for finals, also making him the only other swimmer underneath the 1:48 mark. Yuuki Kobori grabbed second in prelims with a time of 1:48.17, while Takeshi Matsuda turned in a 1:48.29 for third.

The racing slowed down a bit in the women’s 200-meter free with only Chihiro Igarashi dipping below the 2-minute mark. Igarashi, yesterday’s winner in the 400-meter free, finished first with a time of 1:59.90 finishing three seconds short of Japan’s Olympic standard of 1:56.82. Rikako Ikee, who won the women’s 100-meter fly in National Record fashion, posted a 2:00.65 for third.

Rie Kaneto dashed to the top spot in the in the 100-meter breaststroke, stopping the clock at 1:06.91. Kaneto’s time is a slim .33 seconds off her 2016 best of 1:06.58, good for fourth in the world rankings. Reina Aoki was second overall with a time of 1:07.62. Kanako Watanabe delivered a final time of 1:07.79 to settle for the third-place seed.

Ryosuke Irie neared the Japanese Olympic standard in the men’s 100-meter back with a final time of 53.90. Irie will need to shave approximately four-tenths of a second off his time to reach the 53.49 standard. Club Wolverine’s Junya Koga posted a third place finish of 54.12, while Takeshi Kawamoto was second with a 53.93.
