Regan Smith Fueled by Doubles; American Star Surging on Road to Paris (Video)

Regan Smith has never shied away from daunting schedules. The Team USA standout and three-time Olympic medalist routinely tackles multi-event programs, with doubles being the norm. Last week, while racing at the USA Swimming TYR Pro Swim Series, Smith packaged a sensational double in the 200-meter butterfly and 100 backstroke.

After Smith cracked the 2:05 barrier in the 200 fly, thanks to a performance of 2:04.80, Smith clocked a U.S. Open standard of 57.64 in the 100 backstroke. The backstroke time put Smith within .07 of her American record, which she established during her international breakthrough at the 2019 World Championships.

Less than 100 days out from the United States Olympic Trials in Indianapolis, Smith is in an exceptional position on the road to the Olympic Games in Paris. In addition to being a leading contender for the podium in the 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke and butterfly, Smith ranks among the world’s elite performers in the 100 fly and is a top performer in the 200 individual medley.

During the Pro Series, Smith took time to reflect on her current status. Notably, she discussed her preference for tackling doubles.

Here is what Smith had to say.
