Radoslaw Kawecki Downs Meet Record at 2015 European Short Course Championships

Poland’s Radoslaw Kawecki cruised to victory and a new meet record in finals of the men’s 200 back. Kawecki stopped the clock at 1:48.33 to lower his own record of 1:48.51 from 2012.

Adam Peaty (GBR) turned on the heat during the second session of the European Short Course Championships turning in a time of 26.28 in semi-finals of the 50 breaststroke. Peaty’s time sits only .14 seconds off the current meet record of 26.14 set by Alessandro Terrin (ITA) in 2009.

Damir Dugonjic (SLO) and Peaty lit up the pool during finals, finishing .01 seconds apart. Dugonjic stopped the clock at 26.20 over Peaty’s 26.21 for the win. Russia’s Oleg Kostin and Ireland’s Alexander Murphy tied for third with a 26.35.

Fanny Lecluyse (BEL) grabbed the top seed in semi-finals of the women’s 50 breaststroke, posting a final time of 29.76. Finland’s Jenna Laukkanen turned in a close 29.83 for the second-place seed, while Natalia Ivaneeva (RUS) rounded out the top three qualifiers with a 30.06.

Later in finals Laukkanen lowered her time to a 29.71 to earn the gold medal for the women’s 50 breaststroke. Lecluyse slipped to second with a time of 29.84, while Ivaneeva maintained her spot at third with a final time of 29.99.

Katinka Hosszu of Hungary dashed to first in the women’s 400 IM, turning in a sizzling 4:19.75 to finish almost seven seconds ahead of the competition. Hosszu’s final time was just shy of her new World Record of 4:19.46 set earlier in the day during prelims.

Hungary’s Peter Bernek and Germany’s Paul Biedermann battled continually for the win in the men’s 400 free, exchanging fast splits throughout the race. Despite a fast backhalf from Biedermann, Bernek was able to maintain his position and finish first with a time of 3:35.46. Biedermann finished second with a time of 3:35.96.

Hosszu’s speed continued into semi-finals of the women’s 100 back where she posted a 56.49 to earn the top qualifying spot for the next day’s finals. Simona Baumrtova (CZE) qualified second with a 57.13, while Poland’s Alicja Tchorz rounded out the top three with a 57.59.

Italy’s Matteo Rivolta topped the qualifier’s list for the men’s 100 during semi-finals with a time of 49.55. Hungary’s Laszlo Cseh took second overall with a 50.10, while Italy’s Piero Codia  grabbed third with a 50.19.
