ON THE COVER

Fifty years after Swimming World Magazine named Don Scholander as its first World Swimmer of the Year in 1964, Japan’s Kosuke Hagino became the first athlete from Japan-male or female- to win the annual award.  Hagino, 20, captured 12 medals between the Pan Pacific Championships and Asian Games (six gold, four silver and two bronze).  He finished the year ranked No. 1 in both IMs, No. 2 in the 200 free and 200 back as well as fourth in the 100 back and fifth in the 400 free.
