Paraguay’s Benjamin Hockin Doubles Up at South American Championships

MAR DEL PLATA, Argentina, October 2. Paraguay’s Benjamin Hockin took home a pair of titles at the South American Championships here in Argentina on night one.

Hockin formerly competed for Great Britain at the 2008 Beijing Olympics before changing his citizenship to Paraguay for the 2012 London Olympics.  He kicked off the night with a 24.25 to win the men’s 50-meter fly, just clearing Brazil’s Guilherme Guido’s 24.27 in the process.  Brazil’s Ferreira Costa and Argentina’s Marcos Barale tied for third-place honors with matching 24.49s.

Hockin then won the men’s 200-meter free in 1:48.80, while Argentina’s Martin Naidich took second in 1:49.13.  Brazil’s Miguel Leite Valente wound up third in 1:51.56.

Ecuador’s Esteban Enderica Salgado posted a 7:58.23 to win the men’s 800-meter freestyle finale, while Argentina’s Martin Naidich placed just behind with a second-place 7:58.70.  Brazil’s Miguel Leite Valente wound up third in 7:59.47. Ecuador’s Samantha Salinas Arevalo followed with a 4:13.48 to win the women’s 400-meter free.  Chile’s Kristel Kobrich earned second in 4:14.16 with Argentina’s Cecilia Biagioli finishing third in 4:14.41.

Julia Sebastien lowered the Argentinian record in the women’s 50-meter breaststroke with a time of 31.82 in the finale.  That performance lowered her own 32.02 from the 2013 Jose Finkel Trophy meet in Sao Paulo. Her compatriot Macarena Ceballos finished second in 32.37, while Brazil’s Traval Azzolini claimed third in 32.40.

Brazil’s Fernando Ernesto Dos Santos won the men’s 200-meter back by nearly two seconds with a 2:00.65, while Daynara de Paula won the women’s 100-meter fly in 59.76.  Felipe France posted a 1:01.26 to win the men’s 100-meter breast with Joao Gomes Jr. finishing second in 1:02.35.  Argentina’s Virginia Bardach took home the women’s 200-meter IM in 2:15.56.
