Day Three Prelims, Houston Texas
On the strength of a one-two finish by Brooke Forde and Morgan Tankersley in the 500 freestyle and contributions up and down the lineup, Stanford took the lead in the team standings on Night Two. Now, the Cardinal will try to maintain momentum and fend off a Cal squad that has the talent to make a run from its current 45.5-point deficit. Here is a look at how the prelims unfolded on Day Three.

Forde was the 500 freestyle champ on Thursday and will be favored to claim victory in this event during finals.

100 Butterfly
Southern Cal’s Jemma Schlict narrowly eked out the fastest qualifying time in the 100 fly, as her mark of 51.88 was slightly quicker than the 51.92 of Cal’s Isabel Ivey and the 51.95 of the Bears’ Rachel Klinker. The meet has been relatively quiet for Ivey to this point, with the 100 fly her first individual event. Her presence is expected to boost Cal as it chases Stanford in the team standings.
Stanford’s Emma Wheal qualified fourth-fastest in 52.01, followed by the USC duo of Anicka Delgado (52.43) and Hallie Kinsey (52.44).

200 Freestyle
Cal’s Robin Neumann, who powered the Bears to the 800 freestyle relay title on the opening night of competition, generated plenty of clearance from the rest of the field with a top-seeded prelim effort of 1:43.88. Neumann paced four Cal swimmers into the final, as Ayla Spitz was third in 1:45.40 and Eloise Riley was sixth in 1:47.00. Gabbing the eighth slot was Emily Gantriis in 1:47.23.
Stanford saw Morgan Tankersley take the No. 2 seed in 1:45.06 and Brooke Forde qualify fourth in 1:45.46. Forde raced the 400 individual medley earlier in the session and is attempting a brutal double. But the Team USA member has shown grit in the past and her double dip could be critical to Stanford’s team-title hopes.
